Solar photovoltaic (PV) cable is a specialized type of electrical cable designed specifically for connecting solar panels to inverters and other components within a solar power system. It must operate reliably outdoors for many years under harsh environmental conditions, including strong sunlight, high temperatures, low temperatures, moisture, and mechanical stress. For this reason, PV cable is engineered with enhanced electrical, thermal, and weather‑resistant properties that exceed those of ordinary power cables.The conductor of a solar PV cable is usually made of tinned copper, sometimes finely stranded for improved flexibility and easier installation. Tinning the copper helps protect it from corrosion caused by humidity and temperature fluctuations, which is especially important for rooftop and ground-mounted systems. The cross‑sectional area of the conductor is selected based on current-carrying requirements, system voltage, and acceptable voltage drop. Common sizes include 2.5 mm², 4 mm², 6 mm², and larger for high‑power installations.Insulation and sheathing materials are critical to cable performance. Solar PV cables typically use cross-linked polyolefin or similar materials that are halogen-free, flame-retardant, and resistant to UV radiation and ozone. Cross-linking improves thermal stability, allowing the cable to operate continuously at elevated temperatures, often up to 90 °C or even 120 °C, while also tolerating short-term temperature peaks. The outer sheath must also be abrasion-resistant and flexible enough to withstand bending during installation and throughout its service life.Because PV systems are often exposed to direct sunlight and wide temperature swings, UV and weather resistance are essential. Standard building wires can crack, harden, or lose their insulation properties after prolonged exposure, which can lead to safety hazards and power losses. In contrast, solar PV cable is tested according to international standards for resistance to sunlight, thermal cycling, water ingress, and environmental aging, ensuring a typical service life of 25 years or more.Electrical characteristics include high voltage rating and low dielectric losses. Many PV cables are rated up to 1000 V DC or 1500 V DC to match modern solar array designs. The insulation must maintain its integrity under continuous DC voltage, which can be more demanding than alternating current applications. Low resistance and minimal voltage drop help improve overall system efficiency by reducing power loss along the cable runs.Safety is another key aspect. PV cables are often halogen-free and low-smoke, meaning they emit minimal toxic or corrosive gases in case of fire, which is important for installations on buildings and in confined spaces. Flame-retardant properties help limit fire propagation along cable paths. Compliance with relevant international standards and testing protocols ensures that the cables meet stringent safety and performance criteria.In practical use, solar PV cable is compatible with standardized DC connectors to simplify installation and maintenance. It is supplied in various colors, typically black for outdoor use due to superior UV performance, and sometimes red or other colors for polarity identification. Proper selection and installation of PV cable are essential for reliable energy generation, system safety, and long-term performance of any solar power installation.
