Power Cable
A power cable is a vital component in almost every electrical system, responsible for safely transmitting electrical energy from a source to a device or distribution point. It is designed to carry current while providing mechanical strength, electrical insulation, and protection from environmental influences. Although it may appear simple from the outside, a power cable is a carefully engineered product made up of several distinct layers, each serving a specific function.At the core of the cable is the conductor, usually made of copper or aluminum due to their excellent electrical conductivity. This is typically made of materials such as PVC, XLPE, or rubber compounds, selected for their dielectric strength, heat resistance, and durability. The insulation prevents current from leaking to adjacent conductors, nearby metal parts, or the environment, thereby reducing the risk of short circuits and electric shock. In medium‑ and high‑voltage cables, additional layers such as semi‑conductive screens and insulation shields are used to control the electric field and improve operational safety.Outside the insulation, many power cables include bedding, armoring, and sheathing. Bedding provides a smooth interface between inner layers and protective elements. Armoring, which can consist of steel wires or steel tapes, is used to protect the cable from mechanical damage such as impact, crushing, or rodent attack. This is particularly important in underground installations, industrial sites, and areas with heavy traffic. The outer sheath, often made from weather‑resistant polymers, protects against moisture, chemicals, UV radiation, and abrasion.Power cables are classified in several ways, including voltage rating, conductor size, insulation type, and installation method. Low‑voltage power cables are used for residential and commercial wiring, connecting distribution boards, outlets, lighting, and small machines. Medium‑ and high‑voltage cables are used in power distribution networks, substations, renewable energy systems, and large industrial facilities. Specialized designs exist for fire‑resistant and low‑smoke, zero‑halogen applications, where maintaining power to critical systems and limiting toxic emissions during a fire are essential.Selection of the correct power cable involves considering current‑carrying capacity, voltage drop, short‑circuit withstand, ambient conditions, and regulatory standards. Proper installation practices, including correct routing, bending radius, support, and termination, are necessary to ensure long service life and operational reliability.
